On 21 March 2022, the project ‘Advisory Support to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Armenia’ with financial support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Republic of Armenia was launched. The implementing partners for the project are the Dutch NGO Center for International Legal Cooperation (CILC) and the Armenian NGO Europe in Law Association (ELA). The overall goal of the project is to assist the Armenian Constitutional Court in operationalizing its multi-annual strategy in order to generate and coordinate support from the donor community with a view to overcoming its present challenges and enhancing its capacities to better perform its mission of the guardian of democracy in Armenia.
The project team comprises the project director Willem von Niewkerk (director of CILC), justice sector expert Esther de Rooij (Vice-President of the Court of Amsterdam) and national expert Lousineh Hakobyan (President of ELA). On 13 – 19 May the project team held a number of meetings with the Justices and staff of the Constitutional Court, representatives of public institutions, international partners and civil society.
During the meetings held on 16-18 the project team mapped the present needs and challenges of the Constitutional Court and invited a workshop on 19 May with the Justices and staff of the Constitutional Court to discuss the key strategic directions with them. The project team will finalise its advice on the strategy based on the outcomes of the meetings and the workshop and present them at the end of the project.
